Zion, Utah’s first national park, is a massive park full of incredible geological and biological diversity. From burning desert to cool, shaded plateaus, Zion offers days of exploring for visitors of all abilities and interests. Hiking trails range in difficulty from “leg-stretcher” walks to demanding excursions. In the spring, stroll through wildflower patches, and in the fall, take in the bright colors of the changing leaves.
Zion has experienced a long evolution of human history as well. Petroglyphs indicate that humans have inhabited Zion since at least 6,000 B.C., and Anasazi, Paiute, and European descendents have variously occupied the terrain. Mormon pioneers in the 1860s named the canyon Zion, interpreted as a place of safety or refuge. In 1919, Zion National Park was formally established.
At Zion, the National Park Service offers a variety of activities, including numerous hiking groups led by park rangers, night programs, and family activities. The park is open year round. Zion Canyon Visitor Center is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the spring and fall, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter.
