Greyhound Gathering in Kanab

An abundance of sleek, lanky and sometimes festively-costumed Greyhound dogs, and their owners, can be seen roaming Kanab's streets in the month of May.

This annual event is one of the largest Greyhound Gatherings in the western
United States and attracts greyhounds and their human families from around
the United States as well as Canada and England.

Claudia Presto, founder of Kanab's Greyhound Gang and the event's organizer,
said, "This gathering is a celebration of these rescued '45 mph couch
potatoes' and the families who love them."

While in modern times greyhounds are known for their racing prowess, they've
historically been treated lovingly as loyal companions of royalty and
treasured family members. They are the only dog mentioned in the Bible. Both
Chaucer and Shakespeare immortalized them in their literature.

This weekend's celebration of greyhound love, is also a fundraiser.
Thousands of greyhounds yearly need homes when their racing careers are
over. Over three hundred, volunteer, greyhound adoption groups across the
country do their best to rescue as many as they can.

Fundraising activities include over six hundred donated items in a Live and
Silent Auction and Raffle.

A Gathering highlight is the parade down Center Street, to the strains of
"Who Let the Dogs Out", with hundreds of costumed humans and hounds, vying
for prizes and attention. Another highlight is the Blur of Fur, where
greyhounds chase their humans down a strip of grass, while being clocked
with radar guns.

Hikes, Speakers, Running of the Humans, Golfing and tours of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary
round out the weekend.
